Freedom is Written on the Tablets: A Pre-Shavuot Event In Support of Immigrants

Freedom is Written on the Tablets: A Pre-Shavuot Event In Support of Immigrants

Sunday, June 1, 2025 4:00 PM -  6:00 PM

Homewood Friends Meeting House, 3107 N Charles St, Baltimore, MD 21218
Virtual Livestream

As immigrants are under attack in the US and elsewhere, Jews and their friends in the US have an opportunity to consider our own histories in parallel to those of our non-Jewish neighbors. Many of us have ancestors who came recently or in the more distant past to the US. Local advocates and leaders, and Jewish texts about moving from place to place, will educate us, inspire us with stories of immigration in our own day and from generations before, and leave us with actions we can take to help the most vulnerable. On Shavuot, everyone gathered to receive the Torah of freedom and commitment, and we will listen to that story anew. The program will include:

  • A rabbinic dialogue on immigration between Rabbi Ariana Katz and Rabbi Tyler Dratch

  • Jewish immigration storytelling

  • A panel of local immigrant organizations sharing recent experiences and how we can support:

    • Representatives from local immigrant student organization, SOMOS City Knights

    • Immigration activist Sergio España, with the Baltimore Rapid Response and Sanctuary Streets

    • Katie Miller from the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs (MIMA)

We will plan to have a reception to follow featuring some dairy treats (with no-dairy options as well!). For those planning on joining virtually, you will receive the livestream link after registering. Please note that masks are required for this event. The reception will be held downstairs as well as outside on the porch.
